Hi Mark, I have been trying to get an agent here in the UK for some time. Having tried various approaches – suggested by other writers/editors, I have so far remained unsuccessful .
As an American, would your approach be as successful in gaining an agent here in the UK as it may be in America, or would you suggest using someone like yourself in the UK? (I appreciate that my writing may not be good enough, regardless, but would be interested in your response…) Am fairly certain that my writing style is of very little interest in the American market!

In my experience, there’s no difference. A good pitch is a good pitch. And, perhaps, you might be able to get a literary agent in the United States. If we talk, I’ll weigh in on that after learning more about your work.

Hi, I’m a published Czech author. However, Czech publisher concentrate on Czech market almost exclusively. They buy from outside, but they offer only an extremely limited number of Czech authors to non-Czech publishers. I started offering the translated work myself but my publisher not doing that raises red flags. Any idea how to get around that? Agents don’t even open the text the moment they find out I’m offering translated work.

Hi Kristina,
Some literary agents won’t be interested in any particular work, for various reasons, including, sometimes, the fact that an author isn’t in the United States. Nothing we can do about that when that happens, other than be willing and committed to sending out a greater number of queries or submissions to (hopefully) help overcome that challenge.
