Hello – is there a certain number of pre-sales required for books to be stocked in Barnes and Noble? I believe I read it is only 60(!) but I can’t verify that.
Hi Anonymous
I received your message but I have no idea about that, unfortunately.

I’m currently preparing a fantasy novel for traditional querying.
As part of my worldbuilding, I’ve written a few standalone short stories (and may write more) that serve as origin stories for some supporting characters. They are not required to understand the novel, and the novel does not depend on them – at most, they expand on the background details mentioned briefly in passing or completely unrelated events to the main story.
For example, a character’s backstory is briefly referenced in the novel, while the short story explores that event in full.
My question is: would self-publishing or publishing these stories (e.g., on Amazon or in magazines) before or during the querying process have any negative impact on my ability to query or sell the novel to agents/publishers?
Hi Anonymous,
I received your message and I’m happy to help.
What you asked about shouldn’t hurt anything.
In fact, if you get a lot of views, it could be a positive.

Thank you for answering my prior question!
In addition, does the age of the author matter to the agent? More specifically, if the author is a teen?
Thank you so much for your time!
Hi Elzafynne,
My pleasure.

Hi Rob,
Thank you.
We’re doing a significant update now.
Also, no matter what, make sure you always doublecheck the agent’s guidelines when querying.
