I believe I have a fun, compelling middle grade novel (“Purple Dog”) and have gotten comments like “like the concept” and like “your voice” (both pretty important, right?) ad more. But – no bites after 272 total queries (some were YA – my story is a tweener). In any case, I am greatly appreciative of your directory. I used it! But I need help. I have asked before on this format but can’t seem to get an answer. Please get back to me. Thank you.
Hi Wess,

Hi,
I’ve polished up a query letter and proposal for my memoir, aiming to make it the “Thriller” of the literary world. However, the recurring question I receive is whether I fear the repercussions. Now, I’m seeking advice to make it universally appealing and help secure a deal with a publisher unafraid of bold subject matter. I’m on a budget, so I’m looking for someone who can assist without breaking the bank. Any recommendations?
Thanks,

Dear Sir: Several years I published in Amazon a short novel in digital version and in Spanish (Spanish is my mother tongue). I have had my book translated into English. What I would like, naturally paying whatever fee you require, is to send you the novel or a fraction of it and after you have perused it your advice for a suitable literary agent. Than you very much

I have written a trilogy, and the first book, “The House Filler,” was published last year by a small Canadian press. The book has won the 2024 Independent Press Award for new fiction. However, my current publisher hasn’t even read my next book yet (she is too busy). It has exceeded the 60-day period so now I am free to send it to other publishers. However, I have given my current publisher the first refusal right for my next book in the contract, which means that if another publisher accepts my book, I have to bring it to her to match it.
I’ve been looking for a literary agent, but it is hard. I am told by an agent that when a publisher has published the first book in a series, it is really hard to find another publisher. Is this because of the first refusal right? But my current publisher is so tiny that I believe it would be very hard for her to match another offer, and definitely not an offer from one of the “big fives”. How should I approach an agent or potential publishers about this? If I don’t say anything, I will just get rejections.
Your insight will be greatly appreciated!
Hi Sherry,
You should disclose in your letter to agents that you’ve had success with your first book, and you’re now seeking representation for your next book(s). You don’t need to get into all the details in your query. Just say the above for now and try to get an agent interested in the book you’re pitching now.
