I was wondering 1) if it is common for literary agents to accept and pitch a book recommended by their partnering scouts without having read the whole manuscript, just going from an outline? 2) if all books pitched to a traditional publisher are required by those publishers to undergo a developmental editor assessment familiar with the Chicago Manual of Style? If so, do you know a reputable editing service? Thank you!
Hi Mar,
If the scout read the book, that makes sense. If the scout hasn’t read the book, that’s less likely. However, I’ve seen some literary agents offer to represent some of my coaching/consulting clients based on the query letter alone. But when that happens, it’s usually if/when the author has already been well-published previously and/or they’ve won awards.

If an author support website offers workshopping/critiquing services to paid members, and also offers free ‘reading memberships’ of all posted work to the public, would agents and publishers deem those works to be already published, so ineligible for commercial publishing?
Hi Chris,
That’s a fair question, and a legal on that I’m not sure about. Would be best to avoid sharing more than 10-20% of any one work in that format, to reduce the risk of running into problems later. Might not be an issue, at all, but I err on the side of caution with most things.
