I am an upcoming author that have one book published. I been receiving sketchy phone calls about companies purchasing my books but didn’t move forward with because of BS reasons and I always have to invest my money for someone purchasing something that I created. It’s hard for me to actually make money for my work. Instead I have to keep constantly investing money into invoices and other things that is leading to a scam. I want to continue to grow as other but I feel like it’s a waste of time. Even my pursuit of getting a book agent is sketchy.
Hi Keith,
It’s simple: You don’t have to pay anything to get a literary agent and/or a real publisher.

I have a completed historical fiction novel. I also have a great idea for a new novel. When submitting queries to potential literary agents, should I bring up the idea of the second novel?
Hi Douglas,
Since both books are fiction, yes, but make most of your query about the first book. That way, if you don’t get interest for that one, you can focus mainly on the second book later.

Dear Mr. Malatesta:
Thank you for the update.
I’ve given up on getting an agent. I’ve given up on trying to write in a vogue style. And I refuse to mail out cookie-cutter queries.
I’ve come to believe that a good book is irrelevant. Getting published is about platforms, celebrity status, agent leverage and ghost writers.
Btw, Steven King is wrong. One does not have to read to be a writer. His statement to that effect insults we dyslexic writers who find it laborious to read for pleasure. I forgive you SK; we all spawn ignorance when driven by arrogance.
I can never write, nor do I wish to, like the academic writers of Perdue or Oxford who have the luxury of critiques by professors and alumni. My feral-child background dictates I write from my heart, from my swamp-life passion and from my pride.
I believe 90% of readers do not aspire to read with a dictionary in one hand and an academically inspired book in the other.
Unfortunately, tens of thousands of protentional best-selling books will never escape a cardboard box underneath the writer’s desk.
Begging forgiveness for my indulgence.
Charles Ahlman
Hi Charles,
Sorry to hear that, but I understand, as you’re right that many books worthy of publication aren’t able to be published with traditional publishers. If you no longer want to receive my newsletter, please let me know here and I’ll take care of it: https://getaliteraryagent.com/ask-a-literary-agent/.
