hi, I am ready to submit my first novel. Are agents in America open to query letters from Australia or should I stay local?
Hi Arthur,
Most are open, so go for it.
To that end…

Mine has been a rocky, and expensive, road. I wrote a fantasy teen novel that was a finalist in Falchion Killer Nashville. At that time I was with an agent who, although publishing the book, did nothing else. The book, with me paying for the contests, also won other national and international awards, but few sales. I began reworking the story into teleplay format (I am an award-winning screenplay writer). Those episodes continue to win awards. Meantime, the fiction version has hardly moved and has cost me a lot of money. Obviously, judging by the teleplay success, it is a successful tale. How do I find a viable and honest fiction agent? Biographical note: I am an emeritus professor who taught in the English Department of a California University.
Hi Lynn,
I’m happy to help and, hopefully, your next agent/book get you to the next level.

Mark, you might remember from when we consulted by phone that my new novel is set in a small west Texas village composed of roughly equal number of Hispanic and Anglo citizens. It is not a “woke” or “not woke” story. It is closer to a Romeo and Juliet story. Unfortunately, every time an agent understands that it involves some conflict between the two cultures, they would not touch it with a ten foot pole. They are scared t death of that story line. Is there any way you know of to soften their reaction?
Hi Tom,
I looked up your info to remember your work, as it’s been about nine months or so since we talked. Not sure how many agents you’ve pitched, but, if there are more remaining, there’s reason to be hopeful. Not to oversimplify it, or make it sound easy, but you really do “just need one,” so I hope you don’t give up before querying all of the agents, or, at least, many or most of of them. And, what you’re asking for re: how to soften the reaction…that isn’t something I’d be able to figure out or respond to via the Q&A page on my website. It’s a coaching question. I’d need to look at your material again, and talk with you about it, but we explored that and you said it wasn’t a fit. But, if you ask me anything else, and post it for me, I might be able to help.
