I have a novel that doesn’t fit any genre I know of, so I haven’t found an agent to submit it to. It is humorous, tragic, written from a woman’s perspective, irreverent and yet totally respectful of Scripture. The heroine finds herself in a world where she sees what Jesus saved women from by not being married. I am not preaching to the choir. A book agent told me it looked like speculative fiction.

Sometimes, when an author asks me about genre on my website, I can see and easily suggest what they do. More often, it’s not that simple. Your book falls into that latter category. Part of the issue is that some/many books can be called more than one thing. And, sometimes, it’s a good idea to call a book something different depending on the agent you’re pitching. As I’m writing this to you, I’m realizing I should write an article about the topic. The best thing you can do, before pitching agents, since submitting one’s work is time-intensive, is talk with someone about it. Could save you a lot of time/headaches, and help you be more effective.
Don’t rush it.
