I am publishing a book with a small press next year. My publisher has first right of refusal on my next book but I am not obligated to take offer. I have a new manuscript and I’d like to try for an agent with it. Do I need to decline a potential offer from my publisher offer before querying agents? Or, can I query agents first and let any that interested in the ms know my current publisher has first rights of refusal?
Hi Alex,
I don’t believe you need to say anything to the publisher yet, and you might not want to, for now. Why rock the boat before you know what’s going to happen with agents. You can always bring it up with the publisher later, if/when you’re further along. The only consideration I can think of is the long-shot chance that one of the agents you query knows someone at the small press and reaches out to someone there. They shouldn’t do that, of course, but that is possible. And your publisher finding out that way could annoy them.
