This question is about behind-the-scenes agent-editor arrangements. Literary agent is interested in a manuscript but requests that a professional editor be hired to make a final edit. On request, agent recommends an editor. Said editor is also a publisher who accepts unagented submissions (as well as submissions from agents). This is public knowledge – editor has a website advertising their services etc. Begs the question, why go through the agent then? If one is to pay said editor for manuscript editing, why not submit to them directly? Do agents and editors have behind-the-scenes financial arrangements that they don’t disclose? As always, thank you for your guidance!

      Hi L.V.,

If you have a good agent, they’ll be your advocate with the publisher if there’s ever an issue, regardless of the size/type of the publisher. The main advantage of getting a book agent, however, would be for them to try to get you a book deal offer(s) from a publisher(s) that doesn’t accept unagented authors. Those publisher are generally bigger/better.

      Also…

Yes, some agents/editors have the type of arrangement you’re talking about. Not good. As you’ve deduced, their can be a conflict of interest.

      And, lastly…
