No harm in asking, but no one will do that. It’s too difficult to get an agent, and too much of whether you do or don’t will depend on what you do during the process.

My book seems to cross various genres, but doesn’t necessarily fit the strict definitions of say, fantasy or magical realism. It’s adult fiction/YA,
What genre is a book that has:
• a protagonist that comes from a long line of strong, magically gifted women and is set in the recent past (1970’s)
• paranormal/magical elements that act as a catalyst for personal growth while also causing familial conflict and reconciliation
• everyday people interacting with ghosts, gods and goddesses (that can take on human form)
• a strong southern backdrop that informs the characters
• an upbeat tone with touches of humor and some moments of darkness
• the protaganist in this book (The first book of a trilogy) is a young girl coming of age (10-18), book two goes up to 40-ish, and final book is about her life as elder/ crone
Is it fantasy (or paranormal) with a southern twist, contemporary fiction, commercial fiction?

There’s often no simple answer to that type of question, unfortunately. Meaning you might want/need to call it different things when pitching different agents, as you can often call a book more than one thing, and some genres terms mean slightly or significantly different things to different agents. You can add Women’s Fiction to that list you sent me, by the way, and possible upmarket depending on the style.

Say I have self-published with over 10 books over 10 years, or any period, with all the books having upwards of 4.2 stars reviews, but never having had a bestseller, would that be an automatic rejection for a new work never before published.
