I submit a book that nobody reads, because there are just so many submissions, and get a message explaining that it wasn’t read but, still get turned down flatly. Needing a referral.
How are new authors even discovered, if no one is reading?

You will probably need to send out a lot more queries than you’d like.
And you should wait until January.

I have read on several websites that novellas can have a word count of as little as 30,000 words. Is this correct? Would I be able to find an agent?

I’m not sure the exact/typical range for novellas, unfortunately, as I’m not aware of many agents representing them. You can try to find an agent for a novella, but you’d need to do some Googling to see if you can find some agents who represent them. Most will encourage you to turn one of your novellas or short stories into a novel.
